Lib Dems hand Mid-Worcestershire's "Save Our Post Offices" petition to Downing Street12.00.00am GMT Wed 21st Mar 2007 Signatures collected by Liberal Democrats in Mid-Worcestershire calling for Post Offices to be saved from closure have been handed in to Downing Street by Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Susan Kramer MP. Party campaigners throughout the country collected the signatures in protest at government plans to close 2500 Post Office branches. Councillor Margaret Rowley handed on the local petition to Susan Kramer at the recent party conference held in Harrogate. Margaret said, "Many local residents are concerned about the future of the Post Office network. This has been shown by the response to our petition which was printed on our Focus leaflets. As leader of Wychavon District Council's Post Office Services Scrutiny Team, I can confirm that post offices are seen by local residents as the hub of their villages. In the towns, the accessibility of a local post office is also seen as vital. "We are now waiting to see the results of the government's consultation on its Post Office closure plans. We hope that they will take note of our petition and our responses to the consultation. Liberal Democrats will continue to argue for a strong Post Office network as a vital asset in local communities."
